Sicario (2015) Dolby Atmos Review — Deep Bass and Great Surround Sound
Sicario sounds really good in Dolby Atmos. The background score is a big part of it. That slow, deep bass builds the tension even before anything happens. The drive into Juárez is a great example. The music and helicopter sounds make the whole scene feel uneasy. The composer described how he built the score around these sounds.
The border crossing is the standout scene for me. There is so much tension while everyone is waiting, and when the gunfire starts, it hits hard. The surround sound adds to the scene without taking your attention away from what is happening.
The helicopter flyovers make good use of the Atmos height speakers. You can hear the movement overhead, and it gives the outdoor scenes a better sense of space. The overhead effects are used well without being constant.
The tunnel sequence is another highlight. Small sounds get your attention in the quiet moments, which makes the gunshots feel even stronger. Dialogue stays clear, and the dynamic range is excellent.
I prefer this Dolby Atmos mix to Day of the Soldado. The bass, surround effects and background score work really well together. The border crossing and tunnel scenes are worth revisiting on a good home theater system.
