Joker

The background score is what stands out for me in Joker. Hildur Gudnadottir’s music has a deep, heavy sound that adds to the uncomfortable mood. Even during the quieter scenes, the music keeps you involved.

The subway scene makes good use of surround sound. The train noise builds around you as the scene gets more tense, and the sudden gunshots have a sharp impact. The sound team built up the subway sounds gradually to follow Arthur’s tension. Sound team interview

The street and crowd sounds also help give Gotham a busy, unsettled feel. During the riot scenes, the sirens and crowd noise make the sound feel bigger without losing the music.

Dialogue clarity is very good. The quieter conversations are easy to follow, and the difference between those moments and the louder scenes gives the mix good dynamic range. The Atmos effects support the atmosphere without constantly drawing attention overhead.

For me, the score and the detailed surround sound are the main reasons Joker sounds so good on a home theater system.
