Overview

U.S. Navy SEAL Chris Kyle takes his sole mission—protect his comrades—to heart and becomes one of the most lethal snipers in American history. His pinpoint accuracy not only saves countless lives but also makes him a prime target of insurgents. Despite grave danger and his struggle to be a good husband and father to his family back in the States, Kyle serves four tours of duty in Iraq. However, when he finally returns home, he finds that he cannot leave the war behind.

American Sniper (2014) Dolby Atmos Review — Detailed Gunfire and an Intense Sandstorm

American Sniper sounds very good in Dolby Atmos. What stands out for me is the difference between the quiet rooftop scenes and the sudden gunfire. You spend time listening to the surroundings, so each shot gets your attention. The weapons have a solid bass impact without every shot sounding the same.

The sandstorm near the end is the main highlight for surround sound. Wind and gunfire fill the room, with the height speakers adding to the storm overhead. There is a lot happening, but the individual sounds remain easy to pick out.

Dialogue clarity is good, especially during the quieter scenes at home. Those moments feel much smaller and quieter than the combat scenes. That change gives the mix strong dynamic range and helps you feel the tension when the movie returns to Iraq.

The overhead effects are selective, so I wouldn’t expect constant activity from the height speakers. For me, the detailed gunfire, clear dialogue and sandstorm sequence make this a strong home theater audio experience.
